SSW Visa
The SSW (Specified Skilled Worker) visa in Japan is a relatively new type of visa introduced in April 2019 to address labor shortages in specific industries. The SSW visa allows foreign nationals to work in Japan in designated sectors without requiring advanced Japanese language skills or specialized qualifications that are typically necessary for other work visas. This visa category is divided into two types:
Key Points of SSW Visa
- Specified Skilled Worker (i) – SSW1:
- Eligibility: This visa type is for foreign workers with specific skills who pass a skills exam and a Japanese language test.
- Duration: The visa is granted for up to 5 years, but it does not lead to permanent residency or allow for family accompaniment.
- Industries Covered: 14 sectors, including construction, nursing care, agriculture, hospitality, shipbuilding, and food services, among others.
- Specified Skilled Worker (ii) – SSW2:
- Eligibility: This visa is for those who have more advanced skills in their field. Applicants typically must first hold an SSW1 visa before applying for SSW2.
- Duration: This visa can be renewed indefinitely and allows for the possibility of permanent residency. Holders can bring their family members to Japan.
- Industries Covered: As of now, only a few sectors, such as construction and shipbuilding, are included under SSW2.
Key Features of the SSW Visa:
- Employment-Based: Applicants must secure a job with a Japanese employer in a specified industry before applying.
- Language and Skill Tests: Passing a Japanese language proficiency test and a skills test relevant to the intended field of work is required.
- Sponsorship: The employer must provide sponsorship, including submitting necessary documents to prove that the job is within one of the designated sectors.
This visa is aimed at attracting foreign talent to fill the labor gaps in Japan’s aging and shrinking workforce, ensuring that various industries continue to function efficiently.
