Study Visa
A study visa in Japan, also known as a student visa, is a type of visa issued to foreign nationals who wish to study in Japan. This visa allows individuals to attend educational institutions, such as universities, vocational schools, or language schools, for an extended period. Here are some key points about the study visa in Japan:
Types of Study Visas
- Student Visa (留学ビザ, Ryūgaku Visa): This is the most common type of study visa for those who plan to enroll in long-term academic programs, such as university degrees or vocational school programs that last more than three months.
- Pre-College Student Visa (就学ビザ, Shūgaku Visa): This visa is for those attending language schools or preparatory courses that do not lead directly to a degree. It is typically for shorter durations, ranging from 6 months to 2 years.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for a study visa in Japan, applicants generally need to:
- Have a Letter of Admission: You must be accepted by a recognized educational institution in Japan, which will provide you with a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) necessary for the visa application.
- Show Financial Stability: Applicants need to demonstrate they have sufficient funds to cover tuition fees and living expenses in Japan. This can be shown through bank statements, scholarship certificates, or a guarantor’s financial support letter.
- Meet Educational Prerequisites: Depending on the program, there may be specific educational prerequisites, such as a high school diploma for undergraduate programs or a bachelor’s degree for graduate studies.
Application Process
- Receive a Certificate of Eligibility (COE): The educational institution in Japan applies for the COE on your behalf to the Immigration Bureau of Japan. This process usually takes 1 to 3 months.
- Apply for the Visa: Once the COE is issued, the applicant submits it along with the visa application form, passport, photo, and other required documents to the Japanese embassy or consulate in their home country.
- Visa Issuance: After reviewing the application, the embassy or consulate will issue the study visa. This process can take a few days to several weeks.
Duration and Renewal
- Initial Duration: The duration of a student visa can vary from 6 months to 2 years, depending on the course and institution.
- Renewal: If the study program is longer than the visa’s validity, students can renew their visa in Japan through the Immigration Bureau.
Working on a Student Visa
While studying, students on a visa can work part-time, but they must obtain a work permit, known as “Permission to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted Under the Status of Residence Previously Granted.” This allows students to work up to 28 hours per week during the semester and up to 40 hours per week during school vacations.
Key Points to Remember
- Health Insurance: International students are required to enroll in the National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme.
- Visa Restrictions: A study visa is specifically for educational purposes, so engaging in full-time employment or activities not related to study may violate visa conditions.
